It is worth remembering that there are no constitutional provisions regarding presidential primaries and very few details about the election of the president itself. AdvertisementWhat were early presidential elections like? In the wake of the violence, Democrats launched a massive overhaul of their presidential primary process. According to some officials who worked on the commission, their changes had the unintended effect of popularizing state presidential primary elections. In short, party officials’ hands are initially tied, even if they want to cast the deciding votes.

New Hampshire voters head to the polls on Tuesday for the first presidential primary of the 2024 nomination cycle, in a state that has been known to throw curveballs at overwhelming favorites. The withdrawal of Gov. Ron DeSantis from the Republican race on Sunday effectively left what had recently been a crowded field of candidates down to two: former President Donald J. Trump, and former Gov. The national Democratic Party, pushed by President Biden, had wanted New Hampshire Democrats to break tradition and move their primary to the end of February. New Hampshire refused, leaving the president’s supporters to mount a write-in campaign for the absent Mr. Biden against Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, the self-help author Marianne Williams and 19 other Democrats whose names are on the ballot.

Donald Trump is eyeing a win in New Hampshire’s Republican primary in his first one-on-one contest against Nikki Haley, while President Joe Biden is hoping to avoid embarrassment by prevailing in a Democratic primary where he isn’t even on the ballot. The former president is looking for his second straight victory in his quest for the 2024 GOP nomination after knocking out the rest of the field with a commanding win in Iowa. In the first results released early Tuesday, all six registered voters of tiny Dixville Notch cast their ballots for Haley over Trump. The resort town is the only one in New Hampshire this year that opted to vote at midnight. Biden's name isn't on the ballot as a result, but his allies are mounting a write-in campaign for him.

Polls show Trump still has a double-digit lead ahead of Tuesday's New Hampshire primary. AdvertisementNew Hampshire is only the second state to vote in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, but some of former President Donald Trump's foes already look desperate. Iowa's Republican caucuses were the first contest, but New Hampshire has gone to great lengths to ensure its primary election is always the first primary. The biggest difference is that unlike Iowa, New Hampshire has a more open primary system. New Hampshire also doesn't have anywhere near the number of white evangelical conservatives that vote in the Republican primary as Iowa does.

A Haley victory would usher in a more competitive phase of a primary that Trump has so far dominated. President Joe Biden is not on the ballot, having made South Carolina the first formal stop on the Democratic primary calendar. But New Hampshire is sticking to tradition and hosting its own Democratic primary anyway. We're about to find out whether Republican primary voters agree. Furious about Biden's decision, the “Live Free or Die” state ignored the president's wishes and will host its own unsanctioned Democratic primary anyway.

PETERBOROUGH, N.H. (AP) — Trying to upset President Joe Biden in New Hampshire's primary, Democratic challenger Dean Phillips is running a TV ad across the state comparing him to Bigfoot — the argument being both are hard to find. "So I challenged myself to find President Biden in New Hampshire during this primary season. He pushed through Democratic rule changes that prioritized voters of color, deemphasizing New Hampshire's primary. But New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley, who once warned that the new calendar meant a major Democratic challenger could embarrass Biden, now says his write-in campaign should easily prevail. That means Biden supporters could vote in the Republican primary, where Trump and former U.N.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Is a New Hampshire primary without the frontrunner on the ballot and no delegates up for grabs still a New Hampshire primary? In the 2020 New Hampshire Democratic primary, write-in votes comprised only 2% of the total vote, or about 6,000 votes. As the number of write-ins for Biden and “Other write-ins” goes up, the number of unprocessed write-ins will go down. A total of 21 Democrats will appear by name on the New Hampshire primary ballot on Tuesday, in addition to the option to vote for a write-in candidate. She received 99% of the write-in votes cast, but the final result wasn’t known for more than two weeks after Election Day.

New Hampshire Democrats announced on Wednesday that they will hold their presidential primary on Jan. 23 – flouting President Joe Biden and the national party’s plans to anoint South Carolina with the first primary contest. Biden had already elected not to register in New Hampshire, and his name won’t appear on the Democratic presidential primary ballot next year. But the move isn’t without repercussions by the Democratic National Committee, including the potential loss of state delegates to the party convention. The Granite State has held the so-called “first in the nation” primary for more than a century, and a state law enacted in 1975 requires it to occur at least seven days before any other state’s primary or on the second Tuesday in March. Roughly 93% of New Hampshire’s 1.4 million residents are white, according to the U.S. Census, compared to 75% of the U.S. overall.

CNN —President Joe Biden is just as low in the White House’s internal polls as in any of the public ones. But while Biden advisers are dismissive of Rep. Dean Phillips’ primary challenge launched this week, they are also annoyed about it. Still, they remain confident that Biden is Democrats’ best option in 2024. Boyle told CNN this week that between the war in Israel and Gaza and the chaos of House Republicans electing their new speaker, he had not had “one conversation with anyone” about Phillips. Asked if he was worried about Phillips being a factor even back home in their state’s primary, Walz laughed.

Even so, Democrats are wary of any challenge to Biden that could dent the party's chances against likely Republican nominee Donald Trump. He's a friend, someone I deeply respect and admire, but I have a deep disagreement with him on this," Minnesota Democratic Party Chairman Ken Martin said. Top New Hampshire Democrats expect a write-in campaign to kick off on behalf of Biden. Opinion polls show Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents want someone other than Biden, 80, to be the party's nominee, citing concerns about his age. Phillips in August said while he was tired of Trump's fearmongering, he thought Biden should step aside.

Rep. Dean Phillips, who for months urged Biden not to seek reelection before encouraging others to challenge the president, finally seized upon the moment himself on Friday. Biden himself won’t appear on the ballot in the state, due to a disagreement between New Hampshire Democrats and the national party over a new primary calendar that would have its first-in-the-nation primary status rescinded.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — For months, Dean Phillips has been calling for a Democratic primary challenge to President Joe Biden. Asked by CBS News in an interview posted late Thursday if he was running for president, Phillips responded: “I am. I have to.”“I think President Biden has done a spectacular job for our country,” he said. New Hampshire has refused to comply, citing state laws saying its primary must go first, and plans a primary before South Carolina’s. “To do well in the New Hampshire primary, you have to have a message.”There are no primary debates scheduled, according to the DNC.

CNN —Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips announced Thursday that he is running for president, kicking off a long-shot Democratic primary challenge to President Joe Biden. “I think President Biden has done a spectacular job for our country, but it’s not about the past. Phillips is expected to formally announce his campaign Friday in Concord, where he’ll file to run in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary. Biden will not file to appear on the New Hampshire Democratic primary ballot because the state isn’t complying with the national party’s revised nominating calendar, which demoted its first-in-the-nation primary status to second. And it all points to the same thing,” Phillips told CNN after he stepped down from leadership.

Although several key details about next year’s New Hampshire primary have yet to be determined, the event has begun to take shape. Iowa Democrats will now begin mail ballot registration on Nov. 1 and hold an in-person caucus - along with Republicans - on January 15. The results for the Democratic race will be released on March 5, on Super Tuesday. THE TAKEThe compromise honors Iowa's traditional role while ceding influence to more diverse states like South Carolina and Michigan. But President Joe Biden earlier this year replaced Iowa with South Carolina, a state with significantly more Black voters, and one that saved his 2020 presidential campaign. South Carolina will be followed by New Hampshire and Nevada one week later, and then by primaries in Georgia and Michigan.

South Carolina will now kick things off for Democrats, with Michigan — and potentially Georgia — joining the early states in the biggest shakeup of the presidential primary in years, while Nevada will go second. "The Democratic Party looks like America," Harrison added, "And so does this proposal." Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart said the removal of Iowa will expose the party to charges that they have "turned their back on Iowa and rural America." New Hampshire Democrats have asked for more time to try to come up with a solution, but most Democrats say the writing on the wall and expect there will be no solution to the impasse. "Y'all, for far too long, our party's nominating calendar has not reflected this country looks like," said Georgia Rep. Nikema Williams, who is also the chairwoman of the state Democratic Party.
“How dare he?” Laurie Jasper, a member of the New Hampshire Federation of Republican Women, said. Salting the wound was the revelation that South Carolina hadn’t even asked to be first, and officials there contend they were as surprised as anyone to be handed the spot. In South Carolina, the majority of Democratic primary voters are African American. “North Carolina is more diverse than South Carolina. Democrats say they aren’t about to retreat behind South Carolina and anyway, they can’t.
